Gyrokinesis®

The Gyrokinesis Method is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method that coordinates movement, breath and mental focus.

The Gyrokinesis Method is practiced on a mat and chair without equipment. Without the feedback and guidance of equipment, participants in a Gyrokinesis class are more dependent on their own proprioception to explore movement sequences.

This class runs for a series of 4-6 weeks and is currently geared toward Pelvic Floor Health through movements that are reinforced by Gyrokinesis principles.

Core Barre - Smart Movement®
Teacher Training

We provide instructor training in the CORE BARRE System of Smart Movement® exercise modality for teacher training and continuing education.

Core Barre and it's complimentary workshops for continuing education make up  the Systems of Smart Movement® and offer intelligent and exciting programming choices for small group settings as well as private instruction.

The three day teaching training is aimed to inspire and invigorate the teacher, to deepen their own personal practice and to expand their knowledge base of biomechanics with a structured barre syllabus that truly promotes the beauty and Art of Smart Movement®.

Getting Started & FAQ's

  • What is Pilates?
What is Pilates? The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed nearly 100 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It strengthens and tones the muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a more streamlined shape. - Brooke Siler “The Pilates Body”. Joseph H. Pilates, a German immigrant that came to the US in 1926 and settled in NYC where he and his partner, Clara, ran the "Studio for Body Contrology" for 50 years. He died in 1967 and passed his method on to his protege, Romana Kryanowska. The Pilates methodology is safe, effective and can transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. Classical Pilates combines equal amounts of stretch and strength using springs for resistance on specialized pieces of apparatus as well as your own body weight as experienced in the Pilates Mat exercises. It can be done on its own or combined with any other discipline and is a cohesive and intelligent movement system that will absolutely get you in shape and bring you to higher standard of fitness. The system works for accomplished athletes as well as those new to exercise. Be prepared to be inspired, to move and to sweat...the classical method is meant to be physically challenging and the results speak for themselves! Come and let us change your body and your mind. Benefits of Classical Pilates: It's a total body workout. Improves posture and alignment. Strengthens, lengthens and tones the muscles. Strengthens the bones and connective tissues. Improves circulation, concentration and mental alertness. Helps to prevent and heal injuries. It reduces back pain. Reduces stress, improves stamina and confidence. It changes bodies! Pilates is an amazing, complete, and corrective system of exercise, created by a man that George Balachine called a "genius of the body"
  • Is Pilates right For me?
Pilates is an intelligent and invigorating form of exercise for any age or skill level and is one of the fastest growing exercise programs in the world. Any healthy individual can do it and it works! It is a unique way of thinking about your body and how it moves; a way of exercising your muscles and your mind to reshape your body to feel stronger, longer, and leaner! More importantly, Pilates improves your posture! The Pilates method can be adapted for any fitness level and is extraordinary by itself or integrated with any other sport or activity! Clients with chronic pain, health issues, or have recently become pregnant, should consult their physicians before beginning a new exercise regime and should take only private lessons.
  • How often should you practice Pilates?
At least two times a week allows you to progress at a consistent pace and see visible results. Clients often supplement their private sessions with group tower/apparatus class that is not only cost effective, but also allows the body to build strength and flexibility faster. You will, however, feel a difference in your body after just a few sessions! "You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions and have a completely new body in 30 sessions."
  • What can you expect to achieve?
Classical Pilates will give you a strong flexible body, amazing posture, enhanced energy, and awareness of how your body works, and for many, help to relieve chronic pain and stiffness. Combined with good nutrition and a dedication to practice, Pilates alone is enough to get you into shape! It will make you stronger and will allow you to perform your daily activities in life with greater ease.
  • What is the best way to get started with Classical Pilates?

About

Monica Hoekstra

Romana's Pilates® Certified Instructor, GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® Trainer, ACE® Certified.

Monica Hoekstra is the owner of ABsolute Pilates in Charlotte, NC, founded in 2001, and the creator and founder of CORE BARRE - Smart Movement®.

Monica is passionate about teaching and enjoys coaching clients and students to achieve their optimal fitness goals.  She credits much of her teaching style to her early classical ballet training, where she was taught the importance of a solid foundation, a structured syllabus and  a  good understanding  of biomechanics that is relevant to all disciplines of good movement.

Her teaching style is both encouraging and motivating with an emphasis on good technique, precision and control.  She also understands the need to simply keep people moving while guiding them in their own journey of self discovery through an awareness of mind and body and the brilliant system of Contrology as developed by it's creator, Joseph H Pilates.
